I agree wholeheartedly in more ways than I can count and you can imagine. Coating are not generally done correctly from the get go.
Even though I normally don't concur with any internal tank coating even after being in charge of the benchscale tests that showed that a coating would be satisfactory for a particular tank and process material under certain conditions. I would always refrain from saying or being on record stating that a coating was OK for such and such instead it was always laboratory tests showed that xyz coating was satisfactory for these particular conditions.
One of the biggest problems in coatings is that if the production people have a tank for a specific purpose they will always find a way to put something else in it.
As stated above, cost have never came in on budget or the project on time, something always happens to drive up the cost. I seen them all broken equipment, wrong blasting media, getting ahead of the program, weather, and idiocy. I know of one tank I believe you could have made it out of gold for what it has cost to date and it is still not right.
I put Carboline in the post as a starting point but others may have a better material for this application. This is another way of say don't get locked into one vendor until you get to know what's out there.
We stuck mainly with Carboline and Plasite coatings as both companies normally stayed ahead of the curve on product development.
Remove all piping except one line, the test product used for the coating for the tank. If they wan t to add something make them alert the proper people so it can be tested properly. You can't dribble a little in and see what happens.
Watch your personal as a lot of crews are of the pickup variety. Also companies will move people around during jobs to get there better or more knowledgeable people on certain jobs.
As I've stated before a sandblaster is lot more critical to a job than people will admit. A good blaster will get the job done correctly and save you money and time. One thing I accomplished was getting our site blasters into an entry level mechanics pay scale. You would have been amaze at the change in the blasting area of our laydown yard.
Learn the materials, follow the rules, fire off when you need to. In this case it is OK to lead with your lips.
