My Friends,

A knock out drum on high pressure steam header has 3/4" internal projection on the level nozzles. These nozzles are for a bridle pipe that serves a dP level transmitter and a reflex level gage.

The bottom (liquid) nozzle needs a repair and they asked permission to reinstall without any projection. I am fine with that but am curious why there would be a projection. I think I have seen this before on a steam drum, but can find no design guidance to say why there would be a reason to include an internal projection, especially in clean service.

Does anyone know where there would be a 3/4" projection on such a nozzle?

cheers,
Sean
