Interpret CMM Data without Pro/CMM

Having heard that Pro/CMM is not worth purchasing, I assumed that the export functionality of PC-DMIS (CMM software) can give me enough IGES data to create a surface from a quilt feature.

Unfortunately, I have been unsuccessful so far. I have tried exporting PC-DMIS measurement data (created using SCAN feature) to both IGES and STEP formats. The closest I have been is to have an IGES file that graphically shows the CMM 'tool path', but am not able to transform this into a surface.

Does anyone have experience with this? If so, give me some suggestions for reverse engineering parts with this method.

ISDX has funtions that make this easy. They also showed me some tools in the surfaceing class that were part of the Advanced Surfacing Extension (ASX, or the normal surfacing package).

If you data is points. Try making the curves through the points and then making the surface through the curves.

I will check into using some surfacing methods...although with my limited use of ISDX I have seen that creating a surface with a series of curves requires curves that define the boundaries of the surface, which I will have to create specifically.
