I seem to remember that within the express tools to AutoCAD there were commands for interogating the layers within a block. This enabled you to turn of layers within a block without having to explode it.

I know the express tools dont work on AutoCAD LT (I am running 2006) but was wondering if there was another way I could do this. Any suggestions?

I don't believe so. The E.T. command is something like "list nested entity", which makes use of the lisp function "nentsel". You will need a lisp enabler such as "lt-extender".

I think that you can interrogate the layers of a block drawing by invoking the refedit command.
