Hi All,

Is there anybody that is using Intralink to control files other than ProE files. My problem is that I want to control files like MS word and link (relate) them to a drawing. These file would be Engineering Change or NON-Comforance files.
Is there another way to do this other than importing files ie create a form inside of Intralink?

The files would need to be in a database Intralink can see.
This can be any database on any computer.

I have done this in the past and it works very well.

Unfortunately I don't have access where I am currently and I can't give you a step by step.

If I can find the "how-to" I'll post it.

Well... Pro/INTRALINK can manage other files easily... and there are two ways to get the files into Intralink... Import them there... or create them right from Intralink...

First... you have to register the file extension into Intralink... hmm... Here... Using Microsoft Word for example...

In Administration... goto to "Object Types"... click on the "New" button... A pop up opens... Give the file type a name: Word... with the convention *.doc... a description: Microsoft Word Document... with a view and Launch command next... there are 2 ways to do this...

1) you can give them a direct path... like C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Shortcut Bar\Office #FILE

2) OR you can set an evironment variable in the event that the program is located in different locations on the systems... $PDM_WORD #FILE (some programs cannot handle the .1 .2 extensions so you can use the #NOVERSION key word)


There is so much to this I could add... but that's a start...

To create a new Doc you would use the "Object" - "New" drop down and choose the Description you gave gave from the Object Type... give it a name, and choose to open it it there...

To open an existing doc... Right click "open"...

NOW... to associate the Doc to another object... have the doc and the other object in the same workspace... Choose to modify relationships of the object or the Doc... and add the other from the left to the right... Then simply say "OK"...

NOTE: you have to check out with the "ALL" association to have the files check out with the drw, prt, asm files...

Thanks for your help, I have this working now, I had some issues with the file names I was trying to import. You can not have spaces. Rule of thumb just follow intralink naming rules, no space or /...

Rule of thumb for any PTC product:

Treat it like Unix.

The software is still writen for Unix and rewritten (translated) for other systems.

(Proes default installation to Program Files will not work with some of the add-on software because of the space in the directory name. DUH!)
