Iron not listed as a "Remainder" in stainless per ASTM A-479?

I have a "stupid" stainless steel question. Why is "iron" not specifically discussed as a material component in the stainless steel specification ASTM A-479 for bar? It is not even mentioned.

It just seems to me like it should be there for the sake of completeness.

Any thoughts?

If you go back to the general spec it may be listed that way.
Since these are Fe based alloys it does actually go without saying, after all there is no restriction on the Fe content.

It is considered a ferrous-based material under ASTM.

Beh,

Are you just saying that you want to see what % of Fe is in the material without having to do the math?

I can relate to that, but I imagine that most of the people who are looking at the composition are more interested in the alloying elements anyway, so for them, it probably seems complete.

The specs normally state " Balance Fe". In the absence of such a mention,it is assumed that it is iron as we are looking up specs for ferrous based materials.
