Is it necessary to run SQL service manager with Inventor 11 1

Hi everyone,

Regarding Inventor 11 Professional, I noticed "service manager" Microsoft SQL server sqlmangr.exe loading at start up on a computer with Inventor. What does this program do and is it necessary to allow this to load at startup ? What functionality will be lost from Inventor if I disable it ?

I want to free system resources on this machine as much as possible. The computer is not connected to a network or any other computers. If it's something I can disable and/or remove from the start up menu and only use as needed, I would like to do so.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks
John

You can for sure shut it down. The only time I have used it is when I have a local Vault, don't need it if your Vault is on a server or don't have one.

Thanks Keith,

I'm fairly new to Inventor and I have not used the Vault. Is Vault a worthwhile thing to have or use for a single computer and user, or is it mainly intended for a group of users on a network to share data ?

What is a "local" vault ?

I would guess that since this is a single computer not connected to a network, if I had a vault in use it would basically be the same as having the vault on a server, and therefore sql service manager would not be needed. Is this correct ?

Is there a way to disable sql service manager from running at startup within Inventor ? I could delete it from the startup menu but how would I get it back if I wanted it at some point ?

The only other option I can think of is to use msconfig or a startup manager to disable it at startup.

I would appreciate any further feedback.

Thanks
John

I don't see many benefits using the Vault as a single user, other than organizing your work in progress. Plus as a single user you would have to host the Data Management Server on your local machine (local Vault), which requires a seat of SQL, you can use SQL Express, but I believe there is a storage limit. Although it does work very well in a network environment.

You don't need the SQL Manager running. The only time you might use it is if your switching between instances of SQL( multiple databases).

To shutdown just type sqlmangr in the command prompt and toggle off the "Auto-start service when OS starts". Obviously vice versa if you need it back.

Hi Keith,

Actually, I had already unchecked the "auto start service when OS start" box and I am still getting the little SQL service manager computer tower icon showing in the lower right hand side of the task bar.

I also used the startup manager "startup cpl" to disable sql service manager, and yet I still get the computer tower icon showing up in the lower right hand corner of the task bar.

It's not showing up under msconfig startup programs, but I still see sqlmangr.exe running under processes.

Any other ideas on how I can shut this thing down so it does not unnecessarily take up system resources ?

Thanks again,
John

Keith,

Regarding my previous post, I was actually able to shut sql service manager down with the startup manager "startup cpl". I'm not sure why un-checking the "auto start service when OS starts" box did not work. In any event, it's not showing under msconfig startup programs, and the sql computer tower icon no longer shows in the task bar.

However, under processes, there is still something called sqlservr.exe running. I'm not sure why this is so and I did not see a way to disable it under "services".

This is an HP computer and it came new from HP with so much junk automatically loading and running at startup that it's ridiculous. I wish a person could buy a computer with nothing but the OS installed.

I would leave sqlservr.exe running. This process keeps any programs running SQL structures running smoothly, not just Inventor. If you have libraries or use content center, this process will need to run.

To see if you have a instance of a database running, look here to see if instances were created: C:\Program File\Microsoft SQL Server

You should see sub-folders such as MSSQL.1, MSSQL.2 and so on.

Hi Keith,

The only sub-folders in the sql server folder are two folders, one named "MSSQL$AUTODESKVAULT" and one named "80".

It looks like I've got sql service manager stopped. I will leave sqlservr.exe running in case some other program needs it.

Thanks for helping me out with this, I appreciate it.

Take care,
John
