Is it possible to get a 1394 network pci card for a laptop

Need to run Proe and the version I have requires a 1394 network card or something to that effect.
Any advice?

If you're running WinXP I believe the 1394 network connection is the same as Firewire. You can obtain one for a laptop in the form of a PCMCIA card. Best deals online at newegg.com or tigerdirect.com. I've seen them in Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. also.

Virtually any new computer has 1394-Firewire. The new comp I built last week had two! built into the motherboard. I never use them..

I was under the impression that the 1394 on new laptops is a minifirewire, not the full size that is probably needed.

Laptops and PC are usually equipped with the mini-1394, on the front in the case of the PC. The standard 1394 is usually on the back of a PC. The standard 1394 connector is quite large, wider than USB-B connector. Mini-1394 is similar to USB mini-A.

Nonetheless, they are directly connected with converter cable.

Just a caution... firewire can provide an access to your computer from an external source. Just caught the news of late where the FBI can turn on cel phones externally and use them as bugs... same is possible with firewire.

There are two types of card for laptops: PCMCIA and Cardbus. The 1394 ones are all Cardbus. They will only work on the later laptops which have a 32 bit interface.

There was just an article on a couple of the newspapers that the FBI could turn on a celular phone and upload the code to permit the phone to be used as a microphone... they have been able to do this for about 4 years. Because firewire is more user friendly, my programmer buddy said that this would be easier to do with FW than with a cel... only problem is the distance is less. I can likely post a link to the news article.

Is it possible your programmer buddy is confusing Firewire (which is a wired technology akin to USB) with Bluetooth (which is a short-range wireless technology)?

It seems inherently unlikely that the FBI can access a piece of wire having no RF capability without physical access, so I expect this story to appear on Snopes as yet another paranoia hoax

Nope... it's me that's confusing it... was Bluetooth... sorry for any confusion.

Many laptops are Blootooth enabled... incl, mine... he mentioned the article when I was telling him about the Bluetooth capability of my laptop... said this was a huge security hole.
