Is lubrication necessary for polymer bushings? 1

Is it necessay to apply any lubricant to a steel shaft that runs in a polymer (plastic) bushing? If so what kind? Or should such components run "dry"?

For example, the steering components, i.e., tie rod ends, steering wheel shaft, plastic wheels, etc. used on go-karts, lawn mowers, utility carts, wagons, etc.

It dependes on the bushing you are going to use. Normally, they are manufactured with autolubricated plastics, but sometimes it is necessary to lubricate. It is your supplier who has the answer.

Yes, do check with the supplier as to whether they recommend lubrication of the bushing. lubrication will depend on operating conditions and desired life.

and if they do recommend, ensure you clarify exactly what lubricants are compatible. the last thing you want to find is the lubricant you've used has dissolved much of your bushing away.

also, confirm suitable mating materials for your bushing. IGUS has an online catalog and bushing selector that will help. just do a quick search for them (and they're always good for free samples)
