Is split-bolting insulated cables an accepted practice? 1

I'm looking over some old drawings on how a 100Amp DC circuit was run for protection of switchgear and transformers relays that span a length of about 200'. Six transformers and switchgear are spaced about 50' apart. They ran 2 - #2/0 insulated cable in a cable tray and tapped the #6 with split bolt connectors. The #6 terminates in a breaker at each transformer control cabinet and switchgear.

We want to add on. It was suggested and do the same thing. But the split bolt connection seems to be met scorn and ridicule - not sure why. Is this not an accepted practice anymore?

As can be seen in the discussion, some favor polaris connectors.

I see split bolts used often for #6 and larger. They are commonly available with UL listing.
