Is the Furnace connected to burner considered as directly fired? 1

Per Section VIII UW-2 (d)(2), PWHT is required for P-No 1 material if welded joint exceeds 5/8” and is subjected to direct firing.

I am designing a furnace with a burner on one end. Will the furnace be considered as directly fired? My weld is located on the other end of the furnace. Shell Thickness: 1”;

If the burner is facing inside the furnace and you lit up the burner, then your furnace will qualify for direct fired equipment. Yes, UW-2(d)(2) applies.

this is as long as the burner fires "directly" into the chamber and there is not a seperate combustion chamber or the burner is fired into a radiant tube, in these cases it would be indirect firing.

The burner heat up the furnace wall tubes not because of the fire from the burner, which may cause tube impingement. It is the flue gas heat up the furnace wall tubes. Meaning indirect firing.

Furnace wall tubes?? Radiant tubes?? This is a furnace, not a fired steam boiler! And the question was related to the furnace wall, there was no mention of any tubes! Geez..
