Is there a way to insert assembly similar to 'insert part'?

Just out of curiosity, is there a way to 'insert assembly' like 'insert part' can be used for machined & cast versions of a part. Where it automatically updates?

It could be handy if I have assemblies that should be the same except for one or two parts.

badgerdave,

Instead of using Insert->Part just drop the assembly into a new assembly. In assemblies you can easily add cut features, but features to add material are not so available. Adding parts to the base assembly is a snap, too.

Perhaps your needs could also be met within your base assembly just by using configurations that have the extra parts unsuppressed.

Updraft,

That's what I was thinking configurations will be the key, I was hoping to make it so that someone couldn't modify the 'base' assembly.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave,

There are ways to control changes to the base assembly:
1. Departmental procedures and discipline is the best way to control that and preferably includes the use of PDM.
2. Make the assembly Read Only (very small layer of protection, but still something).
3. Save the assembly out as a part file and then save that out as a Parasolid. Import that dumb solid as your base part. This is cumbersome, but certainly prevents simple changes. However, it also discourages simple changes that YOU might want to make (unless you make the changes to the assembly and then re-save all over again).
4. See number 1.
5. Make a backup using Pack and Go and burn the assembly to a CD.
6. See number 1.
7. Ignore 2-6. :)
