Is there such a thing as an inexpensive megger?

Another issue I run into is megger readings. I don't have one and I've found many to be quite expensive. Are there any around that are fairly inexpensive as to the more costly ones?

Reading resistance (ohms) on a motor is OK for one test by the FAQ sheet indicated megger readings are really needed or are they?

A quick check under megohmmeters and I found some for around $100. I'm sure other supply houses have similar prices. These are for simple 500 Volts DC meggars, which should be fine as long as you are dealing with ordinary low voltage (600 volts and below) motors.
Of course if you were looking for something like a $10 multimeter a meggar will cost a little more.
Periodic meggar checks are to test the insulation of the motor windings which gives a rough sketch of the general health of the motor. I would reccomend doing it.
One note of caution be sure when you do a meggar test that no electronic parts or devices will be 'meggared' they will COOK delicate components like transistors, and microchips.

Suggestion: In some cases, the testing device must be recorded, calibrated and numbered. This is usually required by procedures. However, there is usually the cost of Megger no object since the procedure preparation can cost a multiple of the Megger cost. In long run, the Megger is a very rugged meter. It will pay off to own it.
