Is using sprinkler piping to support sprinkler piping ok? 1

I have a situation where a contractor has a pipe hanger hanging off of one sprinkler line to support a lower branch. I have looked through NFPA13 and I don't see this being disallowed. It seems like bad practice to me and something that would not be allowed. Can anyone reference the code that forbids this?

Unless the requirements of 9.2.1.3.3 apply, sprinkler piping shall be substantially supported from the building structure, which must support the added load of the water-filled pipe plus a minimum of 250 lb (114 kg) applied at the point of hanging, except where permitted by 9.2.1.1.2, 9.2.1.3.3, and 9.2.1.4.1.

A sprinkler pipe is not part of the building structure.

Although you apparently have your answer, in addition to a requirement similar to that provided by PEDARRIN2, AS2118.1 specifically also provides:

7.9.9.2 Hoisting
Sprinkler pipes shall not be used for hoisting or supporting other services nor shall articles be hung from them.

Perhaps there is a similar requirement in your codes.


Although: this is not my background, and I guess it was not the intent; however "other services" could be interpreted otherwise.
