Island Mode generator

Dear all...

I have some problem to understand some of electrical topic:

1. What the meaning of Island Mode, is this mode only applied on Diesel Generator or can be anything else?
2. Utility grid is always referred to Island Mode, is that correct?
3. After blackout, is the Island Mode automatically always replaced the Power generator?
