iso violation question

All,

During our last audit we received a minor finding related to a dimension on a drawing and the tool used to inspect said dimension. The part was a 275.75" I-beam with a series of holes through 1 flange. The auditor asked how we can measure the OAL of a 275.75" I-beam with a tape measure and hold a 0.03" tolerance (as described for a 2 place decimal on our title block). I replied with "is there a set of 23' calipers available". So my question is, how do others overcome this hurdle? TIA!!

I don't understand the link between a 2 place decimal and a 0.03" tolerance.
I am used of seeing the tolerances addressed in function of the overall length (following the principles of the ancient EN 13920 (easily found on google images))

The drawings at our company specify 0.4mm for two-place decimals, or 0.015". There also is a disclaimer in our title block 'UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED.' I would add a tolerance adjacent to the 275.75 dimension on the drawing, which would account for the tape measure capability.
