Is it necessary to isolate a 6061-T6 aluminum gusset from a galvanized steel beam to prevent galvanic corrosion (or for any other reason?) This is the framing in a roof. It shouldn't be directly exposed to the weather, however the sides are open so it will not be in a controlled environment either.

Would a thin piece of of 304 stainless steel between the aluminum and steel help or hurt?

If it does need to be isolated, what is recommended?

The zinc on the steel will cathodically protect the aluminum as well as the zinc as long as you leave them in electrical contact. So, don't take any precautions to isolate the metals.

I should have said "...protect the aluminum as well as the steel..". Sorry
