I am in the middle of a disagreement over the issuing of part numbers to parts & drawings.

A collegue that has been working here for many years (I have only recently joined) claims that it is correct ISO practice to take a part and issue it with multiple part numbers and drawings because is it being used on a multiple projects. I disagree. I think that one part should have one part number and one drawing.

Are there any ISO guidelines on this?

Paul.

I dont know of any standard but i would say that you are correct if the parts are all identical ( including finish colour) What happens in the stores? Do they have a separate location for each part number? Do the stores have to renumber?

Do you or did you work for ATL?

Dan

Unless there are form/fit/function differences, we utilize the same part number for a component even if it is used across platforms. It is easier to track, procure, and inventory.

You can look here and do a search on Technical Drawings. ISO 1011 might be a place to start. Off hand I do not recall if it contains specifics on part numbering schemes.

Hi Dan,
Yes I did...I remember that you took my old job at Fairline. Are you still there? I've moved on to MUCH better things.

PSE, Thanks - I'll have a good look.

Paul.

Are you talking about ISO drafting standards or ISO9000/9001 compliance?

I would repost in forum1103, you may get better suggestions. Can your colleague cite a specific standard and paragraph?
