I had couple of questions on modeling crack in ansys...

1. When i have to put a very thin crack, can i just keep the two areas that form the upper and lower surface of the crack unmerged which means when i load up the model, i will have the two surfaces separate like a crack surface....i have seen people put small widths between the crack surfaces by deleting elements....is it actually required?

2. I am noticing that while using CINT command in Ansys, not always the J-integral values converge even at very far away distance from the crack tip...did anybody have this problem specially when you have stacks of different material close to the crack? If so, what do you think are the possible reasons? Also, if i can't get it converge, how do i choose which value to take as the J-integral for post-processing?
