I am curious what the difference is between a Designer and an Engineer in the Power Systems Field. (Both Electrical)

My apologies if the answer is trivial, but my company uses both titles, however treat them as interchangable. No one can answer me either as to what eachs role is and how its different then the other.

Thanks in advance.

Well.. In a lot of industries there can be "designers". They are often undegreed individuals who are none-the-less often very skilled at a particular subject. They do the same in-the-box designs regularly and so know the field and the subject intimately. Whereas an engineer would be degreed and likely able to tackle a wider range of tasks but possibly be rather slow at some.

In your case a designer might be the person who can do the specing and layout of facility electrical stuff. You'd require a PE to sign off on all the stuff but the designer would do most the work.

In many states, the use of the term "engineer" is restricted to those individuals who are duly licensed by the state board in the practice of engineering (i.e., "PE").
