Job possibility?

Has anyone had a similar situation? Given the feedback and the responses, what would be your thoughts on the possibility of a job offer? Anything that I need to think about or be aware of?

I recently interviewed for an engineering position in engineering design firm in a different industry than most of my experience. It is a small, young and very dynamically growing firm. My experience touches a little on that industry here and there, but mainly its in a different industry. There are many areas of crossover though.

Anyway, the two interviews went well. I met individually with about 6 of the employees there as well as with the owner. The owner called several of my references and reported very glowing responses from them.

He says that the others who met with me were all very impressed and that at least one thinks he’s crazy for not hiring me on the spot. The only issue is they need not only someone like me for the long term, but they also need immediate help from someone with a lot of experience in that particular industry to help get them caught up. I would be learning the industry under a much more senior guy for the next 3 to 5 years. I think the owner is trying to negotiate some temporary help (subcontract some work to an outside firm) to get them out of the hole and if he can do this he will be interested in me as well.

He said that he is 90% sure that he will offer me a position. He discussed with the senior engineer (the one with whom I would work closely) the idea of sending me to an industry training course to get me jump started. I should hear back from him this week once he’s done negotiating for the temporary help from the other firm. There were several points in common between myself and the senior guy and the others seemed to accept me fairly openly.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Well HVAC... you know very well that nobody has the answer, you're just very excited about this and eager to share that :-D
Anyway after reading this I think you can take the putter to give a final little push! Get ready for salary negotiations. Fingers crossed. Let us know...

As usual, just beating myself up trying to determine if this is going to translate into something or not. Maybe they really want someone with more industrial expereince and they are holding me off in case they find someone better.

A friend who hires people says that they wouldn't have dangled the carrots in front of me if an offer weren't coming.

I guess I wanted some reassurance or a reality check.

For what it's worth, I've got a 100% record in predicting whether an offer will or will not follow an interview. This is after some 12-15 interviews over the course of my career.

If you think it's going to happen, it probably will.

Well there seem like a lot of positives there to me, a thriving company, a boss who involves his staff in decision making, someone prepared to offer training from day one and a boss who is honest with you.

Taking on staff is a difficult job especially in small companies, I am sure he has a perfect candidate in his mind, probably the worlds leading authority in this particular field who can hit the ground running from day one, probably bring a good few clients with him and prepared to work for below market levels. I am also sure he doubts he will find this employee.

So everything then becomes a trade off, pay over the going rate, someone who can do the job from day one but who has maybe bad references or he feels will not fit in or someone who he feels will fit in well but will require training and only really benefit the company long term, that seems to be how he views you.

That still leaves him with the short term problem and how to overcome that, it will probably be very costly to train someone and get a contractor in and most small companies run on a very tight budget, he would be foolish not to look at all options.

I would guess the 90% probability of being taken on is a true reflection and it seems like he views you very highly. I hope it goes well for you it sounds like a gem of a company.

That's quite different from my experience - some of my worst interviews (by my judgement) have ended up with some of my best offers. It's been a long time since I interviewed "unsuccessfully," though (not happened since college, if memory serves).
