Hi
Wondering how many of you bioengineers did grad school and how many went straight after undergrad into the field? Any tips for places to apply? I have a BSc in Biology and Mechanical Engineering, and not a lot of luck looking for jobs in the field. Plan to do grad school in a few years.
Thanx!:)

I have a BSc in Mechanical, and I kind of fell right into a Biomedical job. It's really more biomechanical - in the orthopedic implants field. It's pretty fun stuff, simple in principle but loads of hurdles and hoops since you're playing (potentially) with people's lives.

It's a volatile field, but is slated to grow through the roof for at least the next ten years. try.... orthoworld.com

btw, I got this job through my school's career resource center, even after 6 months out of school they hooked me up.

Just keep your eyes and ears open and stay flexible.

One of the most interesting things to me is that (in my field of orthopaedic implants) we use very few materials. The FDA is quite strict about what can be implanted into people, so there is a Lot of work that must be done to get a material approved. Therefore the list of usable materials is quite short.

We use Ti 6Al 4V ELI almost exclusively for implants (another quirk is that you canNOT have dissimilar metals in contact because of the dialectric effect). Another material is called PEEK (polyetheretherketone) which is a pretty impressive polymer.

Instruments are usually just some form of stainless, as they only have limited body contact.

Just amusing to think that out of all the materials in the world I tend to only deal with three.
