I was wondering if anyone had any information for joists manufactured by John W. Hancock Jr., Inc.?

The joists tags are simple. They say:
John W. Hancock Jr, Inc.
H17241_H2

I'm assuming the "H17241" is the job number since it is common with other joists on the same project and the "H2" is the joist designation.

The joist designations do not seem to fit the standard SJI designations from the early 70s (when the building was constructed) published in the applicable joist tables. For example, this joist, designated "H2", is 24" deep. The SJI load tables from 1972 do not show a 24H2. The smallest joist appears to be a 24H6.

I have questions on other joists on this project as well. Thanks for any help.

Generally, on older tags, the H2 does not refer to the joist size or type. Rather, that specific designation (H2) refers to the second type of joist used on that project. You'll probably find an H1 somewhere, too. The H1, H2, etc. are for denoting which joist goes where during erection.

Call John Hancock and talk directly with them. They are very much still in business. Their plant is on Salem, Virginia. Here is a link to their web site:

I would talk to some of the fellow engineers on the staff. I have found them to be very helpful in the past.
