Joining titanium plates to carbon by mean of friction

Dear All,

I am designing a link between a carbon web and a couple of titanium plates. Carbon web is in between titanium plates.
I need to transfer trouh the link a big force (i.e. .> 5.0e5N). I am thinking to use bolt preload to develop, by mean of friction, a force that could overcome the external action. Do you have any number for friction coeff. in between carbon and titanium? Any tip for surface preparation?

Best Regards,

Ziller.

Titanium is usually clad on carbon steel by explosive welding and subsequent rolling. You may be interested in looking at the following Report titled "A new titanium and zirconium clad plate: a breakthrough in cladding technology" that has been recently published at page 114 in the issue 3/2005 of Welding and Cutting, the official journal of the European Welding Institutes (DVS, TWI and IS).

Carbon and what? How thick?

I would be concerned about cold-flow and loss of preload.

Dear Goahead,

thanks for the replay, but I probably formulated my question improperly. When I say carbon in reality is composite material.

If you can't measure the friction coefficient for your proposed joint materials, then you should assume a low coefficient (like 0.1) that will require a higher preload. Actually, the low coefficient would be representative of reality if the joint had become contaminated, for example with machining fluid.

For surface preparation, I would use a mild solvent to degrease both the titanium and the carbon composite prior to assembly. Isopropanol is common.

Cory
