Table UW-12, for type (4) joint, specifies that Category C circumferential joints should not be over 5/8" thick. Is this refering to the weld leg / collar dimension of the fillet weld? Or to the thickness of the components being welded together? If neither, what does it refer to?

Thank you very much for your valuable insight.

mrsteam, while I am not completely certain, since the point of UW-12 is to establish joint efficiencies used in calculating the thickness of heads, cylinders, etc. my interpretation is that the thicknesses referred to are the component thicknesses, probably nominal.

It is interesting that for some other types of joints the table uses the terms required or nominal, but for Type 4, just "thickness".

That's my best guess.

Regards,

Mike
