We are analyzing a joint and are uncertain about our method of choice. I've attached an image.

The vertical member is considered fixed at the upper end, we've decide to take a section through the gussets (Section O-O). We've assumed that our moment arm is the distance from the neutral axis of our section to the center of the distributed load. The shear was transformed along that plane (45 degrees). We are using Von-Mises to calculate combined stress.

Is this the right approach? Is this overly conservative?

Offhand, I think I would consider the eccentricity to be the distance from the centroid of the vertical member to the centroid of the load.
