Hello,

My colleagues (consisting of welders and API Inspectors) were discussing the leak test requirements in accordance with ASME B31.3, 345.2.2(a). Some of them felt the words "and connections" are redundant and "joints". I know this is not a technical question, but just wanted to see what's the consensus is on "joints" and "connections".

From definitions:

connections for external piping: those integral parts of individual pieces of equipment that are designed for attachment of external piping.

joint design: the joint geometry together with the required dimensions of the welded joint.

to summarize, connections = flanges and joints = welded connections.
