I am currently in the process of redesigning a butterfly valve system. I need to reduce the thickness of a journal type bearing sleeve from 3mm to 2mm.

Is there a rule of thumb/standard I need to adhere toward, Or is there a calculation I can use?

Thank you in advance,

Ryan

Is it actually a hydrodynamic journal bearing, or just a bushing operating in boundary contact conditions? If it is the latter, the radial wall thickness of the bushing/sleeve should be sufficient to maintain any interference fit used to hold it in place. Unless the sleeve bore is large, and/or there is a large CTE mismatch between the housing bore and sleeve, then a 2mm wall thickness should provide sufficient radial stiffness to maintain a normal interference fit.

More details would be helpful.

As TBulena said way more info is needed.

Based on the precious little info I offer this -
For steel backed bearings with any of a variety of tasty overlays 2 mm for split inserts and 1.5 mm for 1 piece bushings gets it done in Nascar .
