Just got NX4

Well I finally got back to using NX after a few months away from it. I'm evaluating it for my employer to use throughout for design and manufacture. For me, it's a not brainer for cam but it will be interesting to see how the designers like it compared to their Solidworks 2003. The last version of UG for me was NX2 (with just a peek at 3).

UGS has really done a nice job with the new customizable interface. Nice job. Can't wait to dig into it!

Your designer should really be comparing it to Solidworks 2006. There's a world of difference between 2003 and 2006.

That said, I'm eagerly awaiting Nx4 as it looks a lot better than NX2...and looks alot more like Solidworks.

I'm all for customizing toolbars and icons etc, but I think the menu customization is going a step too far. It used to be if you needed to walk over to another computer to show somebody something (or explain something on this forum) you could fall back on the menu structure becuase it is the same for everyone. Now that you can drag menu items willy nilly like toolbar icons it will be a free for all. Of course that is the pessimistic view. Hopefully most users won't change things so much as to be confusing for others.

Yes SW2006 would be the comparison but the company let their maintannce lapse a couple years ago. No one wanted to deal with updates. Now they've decided to move to a "worldclass" operation and would like to achieve a mostly paperless environment. The company has grown so fast they're also looking into a PDM solution as well.

We'll see how far they go down this path before they just "drop back and punt" meaning drop the whole idea and maybe upgrade to SW2006. I've been involved with this process before and found it's very easy to just go back to the old ways. I'll be optomistic though... : )

You make a valid point about customized desktops. I think that's why some of the big companys lock it in. I recall Boeing doing that. I'm sure the automakers do it as well. We have about 20 users so I think we'll keep it flexible.
