Lean principles or any other manufacturing technique has little to offer against natural calamities; what lean does promote is teamwork,standard work,kaizen etc (house of lean) that help jump back on track sooner than a mass produce ever could.
The Aisin Fire was a great example of Toyota's longtime relationship with its suppliers (based on mutual trust and growth and NOT quantity (ppv) and least price)helped resume production without any major hiccups.
