Just migrated to Win7 now SLOW

My company just migrated to win7 and are running NX6.0.5.3 which is 64 bit. We are a large company so migration always takes place late.

The question is that since the migration the performance of NX appears to have gone down. Now when I click to add a note to a drawing I have to wait 2-3 seconds for NX to respond. I can very easily type faster than the note window will respond (and I'm a 30-35wpm typist), and then more waiting once the note is placed on the drawing field. It seems that most mouse clicks will require a 2-3 second response with some being much longer.

A lot if not all functions seem to be slow to respond, the example of creating the note is just that, an example. The slowness does seem to be more obvious in the drafting mode than in modeling.

I've contacted our in-house support and surveyed other users within the company. All seem to be having the issue and our in-house support seems to be baffled.

Thoughts/suggestions?

I have the same problem in large assemblies, using NX6.0.5.3 as well. And despite what's been said about it in previous threads, it happens with brand new drawings (and components) as well, not just legacy ones.
It's worst when using the weld-symbol. The text "updating objects" flashes in the top bar for a long period of time in between each character I type or each welding-configuration I choose. Upon placing the symbol into the drawing, I need to wait for these "updating objects" even more. If I have placed the weld symbol but need to move it so that it mirrors/switches sides, I also need to wait.

This happens EVERY TIME, and also after saving, closing, exiting, and opening again. I'm also running Win7, but I have never tried NX on any other OS.

Hi ugdriver,

Win7 takes a lot of memory, I changed the Windows Theme to Windows 7 Basic and that improved on my Dell M6600 Win7 64 bit laptop.

Kind regards,
Pascal

Hi ugdriver,

did changing the Windows Theme helped?

Changing to Window basic theme didn't seem to help at all.

Are your graphics drivers up to date for the hardware? Drivers shipped when a system is built are ususally not the latest.
Are you running 64-bit NX? Unless your IT requested new CDs/DVDs, the 32-bit and 64-bit distribution is different disks.
Did IT turn off hyper-threading on your CPUs?
Did you turn off Windows Aero as your primary background screen? The Aero background is a resource hog!

With that said, why are you migrating to a system that is 3 or more years old? Even large companies can be more responsive than that.
(I have worked for a very large NX customer whose initials begin with 'G', so I do understand how some companies work.)

I have been on Windows7 for a couple weeks now.
I really hate it.

I'll try to respond to the questions....

graphics drivers are up to date as far as I can tell

yes, we are running the 64 bit version of NX.

Hyper-threading.... don't know will have to check

I normally change the background to something cool like basic black but haven't so far.

Migrating into a system that is 3 plus years old is just the amount of time it takes to get most of our add-on's verified and running. Upgrading is a serious business for us since many of the applications we run are not commercially available. In other words many are written in house... So those that are not compatible then either have to be updated and tested or recompiled at least.

Unfortunately if we have a failure in one of our products you can't pull over to the side of the road and call a tow truck.

Experienced the same right after moving to Win 7 on a new Dell T3600. I dumped the Aero interface and went back to the old XP style and that seemed like it helped alot.

I had the same problem under NX5 when I switched from XP32 to XP64. It only went away when we upgraded to NX7.5 (at which point I was on Win7/64). It seemed to me there was a coding issue with the way drafting was handled in Win 7 vs XP, but I don't know for sure.

I've seen a similar issue with notes in the passed where NX would query the licence server for a particular Teamcenter increment in the licence file each time the note dialogue was launched. This was causing a noticable delay of anything between 2-5 seconds which wasn't evident in native or previous maintenance releases. The only difference is that this was in NX7.5.4 and was fixed in MP2, (This was running NX with TC).
I'd recommend putting a call into GTAC.
