If there is a kink in a weld symbol leader does this mean something? Just heard this for the first time the other day but no details were discussed.

If the arrow is "kinked" then that means the member in which the arrow is pointing to gets beveled, as in the case of a single bevel groove weld.

The devil is in the details; she also wears prada.

I didn't understand greg's query to be about a beveled symbol, but rather just the leader not being straight, which has no meaning. That "kink" is where you would put a site weld symbol.

No, the kink or break has nothing to do with the weld. If the weld is asymetric, that is shown by calls above and below the reference line.

Those are near and far side. Or is someone disbelieving Miller and the AWS?

I agree with the Miller description of weld symbols, but I didn't find any statement about the kink meaning anything.

The "kink" is on every weld symbol in AWS 2.4 and every symbol in the Miller attachment.
It means absolutely nothing.
The reference line must be horizontal so the "kink" which points to the weld can be down, up or backwards dependent on actual weld location.

Only a couple of Miller weld symbols have a break in the symbol leader. Since it's the symbol leader that is in the OP's question not the attachment of the leader to the rest of the symbol, that's the area to focus on.

I assumed gregdavison was referring to an arrow break. "Kink" is a non-standard term, probably used by non-welding people, but a break has a very specific meaning. This snippet is from AWS 2.4
