Hi All,

Have a renovation where we are cutting into an existing masonry block foundation wall in order to install an egress window, have speced L channels (3 1/2'' x 3 1/2'' x 7/16'') for the header
was just wondering how to go about detailing a connection. Was thinking about grouting the existing masonry block and anchor bolting through.

Thanks

The detail that I'm used to seeing goes like this:

1) The angles get let into the bearing and just sit in loose.

2) The undersides of the angles between the bearings get intermittent, welded stich plates to hold everything together.

3) The cells at the bearing get grouted for a few courses if they are not already. For a light enough load, I suppose one might just bear on the face shells. My gut feel is that most of the load gets delivered their no matter what since that's where the shear web element of the angles winds up being.

Be mindful of water. I don't like these on exterior walls. Make sure there's a good flashing detail - just caulking it might work for a while (maybe even as long a the contractor's 'warranty') but won't hold up for very long.

I assume this is residential construction with a wood framed floor? If so, check to see if the existing rim joist can span the new window opening. If it can, you don't need a header.
