Lab Tests on Old Steel 1

Any suggestions what kind of lab tests are needed to determine the properties of an old steel from 1920's. I am looking at chemical, elongation and weldability tests although I won't want to weld anything to it. The existing frame has riveted connection and I'll use bolted connection. I was just wondering if I am missing any tests.
Thanks.

You might want to check notch toughness as well. If it comes in much less than modern steels, you may not be able to get full bearing strength at the edge of the bolt holes.

I would think the tests would relate to the properties you need. Tensile test, first off. Perhaps notch toughness, especially if highly stressed or exposed to cold climates.

At some time on this project you may need to get a 1920's view of steel design/construction. The "Carnegie Pocket Companion - 1923" may be useful - it is available under "Miscellaneous" on my website home page, at the link below.
