Hi Guys,

I own a landrover 2A, to which I intend to fit a "Capstan" winch, these are powered by the engine, being connected to the starting dog at the front.

The disadvantage being that when fitted, one can no longer start the engine via the crank handle.

My qestion is, is it feasible to power the winch via a Hydraulic pump.

The primary would be connected to the power take off on the engine, then hoses to the hydraulic motor driving the winch.

Any ideas Guys ??

Regards,

Ras.

Provided that you mechanically disconnect the pump shaft when the winch is not in use, it could work okay. Maybe the PTO has a disconnect already; I'm not familiar with LRs. Hydraulic pumps don't like to be driven at highway speeds.

OR, you could fit a hydraulic pump with an electric clutch and v-belt drive, etc.

BUT, a hydraulic pump, motor, hoses, reservoir, etc adds a _lot_ of weight.

An electric winch should be lighter, probably cheaper, and will still work when the engine can't.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the prompt reply, yes youre right the best way would be to go electric, it simply means an upgrade to the power supply, which of course isnt a problem.

Thanks & Regards,

Ras.

There are manufacturers that sell hydraulic winches. In the applications that I am familier with they are driven by the power steering pump and use a two-position valve to divert oil to the winch. Take a look at Mile Marker's website.

If you could find a used pump then the only other things you would need to adapt your winch are a sutiable gear motor, a valve, some hoses, angle iron, JB weld, some bailing wire, and a big roll of duct tape!

Good luck!

Couldn't you use a power steering pump? (not sure 2A's had PS) As long as the hydraulic motor was sized for PS pressures, it would be a clean set-up.
