Does anyone know where I can find some practical refences, guidance etc on landslides prevention and mitigation? I am looking for some relatively cheap means of stabilizing earth in a third-world country with a volcanic origin.

Probably the best book I have seen is TRRL's Overseas Research Note 16 entitled Principals of Low Cost Road Engieering in Mountainous Terrain (1997). It is a good book showing low cost solutions to retwalls, drainage for slopes, etc. Also ORN 14 - Hydrological Design Manual for Slope Stability in the Tropics (1997). I was able to download these but apologise in that I don't have the URL. You can try trhough or get a whole list of their publications (ORN series not in list) at .

Also you can get Transportation Research Boards Special Publications 176 (year 1978) (Landslides - Analyses and ???) and No 247 (year 1996) "Landslides - Investigations and mitigation."

India also has some books/codes of practice, etc. Example Indian Roads Congress SP-48 Hill Road Manual (1998). Also their Highway Research Board Special Report 16 (1996) Landslide Corrective Techniques.
