At our job we have a situation where we make extremely large assemblies both in component quantity and assembly length.

We are trying to implement a best practices and have come to two schools of thought. The end goal is to have multiple representations of a finished sub-assembly module so that when it is loaded into a larger assembly we can simplify it to aid in load time and visualization.

Camp 1) Using arrangements, we will create three arrangements, Envelope, Simple, and Detailed. Then we would create a "dummy" simple component and a "dummy" envelope component that would be unassociative and manually done. Using arrangements either one of these dummy components would be shown or they both would be suppressed and the original components would be shown. The major drawback I see to this is the separate unassociative components that would require constant updating.

Camp 2) Using Reference Sets, we would create a Envelope, Simple/(MODEL), Detailed reference set. Then using wrap assembly and linked external geometry we could create different bodies in the assembly and then control their states in the upper level assy using reference sets. The downside is I don't think using reference sets in assemblies is an encouraged practice and there is no easy way to see what is in the reference sets like using arrangements. The upside though is not having to create extra components.

Does anybody have an opinion or advise on this? Hopefully there is a good middle road here.

Thanks,
Eric

Have a look at Assemblies --> Context Control --> define product outline, it's perfect for ultra quick loading of an entire assembly and visualisation. You can't do anything other than that though other than fully open the parts by selecting them

Why not use Teamcentre Vis Mockup for visualisation?
