We purchased several 30" flanges for ASME application. The flanges came in stamped ANSI B16.47 Class "E". They are ffso flanges. Are these acceptable to use per Code?

There are no Class "E" nor slip-on flanges in ASME B16.47. ASME B16.47 are welding neck flanges and they are either Series A or Series B. Are you sure those 30" flanges are B16.47's?

Class E refers to AWWA flanges. I think you have some standards mixed up.

When you say ASME application, if your talking about for ASME Pressure Vessels, I can't answer that. They would be acceptable in ASME B31.3 Piping when used within their allowable pressure ratings. Hopefully your service is water.

The link below to Texas Flange may have some answers for you. They have a nice on-line catalog.

I have inspected the flanges and they have been stamped around the rim with B16.47 Class "E". Could this be an error by the vendor? I thought it was strange since I had never heard of this type flange in B16.47. The vendor has provided pressure/temperature rating but I don't believe the B16.47 is correct.

Actually we purchased these flanges from texas flange thru our supplier. They sent us a dimensional drawing and pressure/temperature rating. When we ordered they said it was a B16.1 type Class E flange, but that spec is for cast iron flanges. When the flanges came in they were stamped B16.47, Class "E".

UUUUmmmmmmm....

Could the "E" really be a "B" if it is the last letter of the Stamp ? Is this a stamping error by the manufacturer ?

Check the dimensions of the flange in question and see if they match those of of a B16.47 Series "B" flange

Could this thread be a waste of time ???????

My opinion only

They were stamped incorrectly by the vendor. We have returned these and received the correct weld neck flanges.

pERHAPS ANSI/AWWA C207-01
1.3.2.3 Class E flanges are suitable for pressure ratings up to and including 275 psi (1,896 Wa). Dimensions of Table 4 flanges are identical to ANSI/ASME B16.5 class 150 flanges up to 24 in. (600 mm) (without raised face), and ANSI/ASME B16.1 class 125 large diameter flanges above 24 in. (600 mm) (without raised face), except they shall be faced in accordance with Sec. 4.2.2 of this standard.

Normally slip on flanges are as per ANSI B16.5

WELDING NECK FLANGES ABOVE 26" ARE PER API 605
WELDING NECK FLANGES BELLOW 24" ARE PER ANSI B16.5
