Dear all,

Given a circular opening in a torispherical head. The opening is large, but within the spherical part of the head. The nozzle is inserted through the head - no internal projection (flush with the internal side of the plate). The nozzle wall is so thick, that it forms the flange for a flat end cover with a ring gasket. Tapered holes for bolting and a grove for the gasket are machined into the "nozzle wall".

Question No. 1
Can the material in the nozzle wall outside the head used in the reinforcement calc. for the opening be consider in the flange calculation - or should the flange be assumed starting where the reinforcement is no longer considered (2.5 times head WT out from the head surface) thus avoiding overlap of areas?

Question No. 2
Does ASME VIII Division 1 allow FE analysis of this construction.

See UW-40 esp(a-2) There are some interps. on this.

FEA- See Forward and U-2(g),talk to your AIA.

Your 'flange' is not really a flange (no bending stresses in it), so you should be able to use all the metal within the limits for reinforcement (but metal lacking in bolt holes need be deducted).
Concerning FEA, I concur with deanc: you need to agree that with the AI. However if it is a concentric large opening you should be able to design it without FEA.
