Has anyone got experience of using Laser Scanners such as CYRAX, RIEGL, CALLIDUS instruments. I would apreciate feedback about usefulness and especially how well the CAD software works with these instruments.

Thank you,

my research topic is laser scanning systems. i espacially work on airborne laser scanning systems. but i can answer your questions.

it is very usefull for profiling objects and relief projects. it collects X, Y, Z directly in a very short time. and you can use those data with all CAD programs. after, evaluation of data depends on you and your software.

this system is very amazing.

if you have more detailed question, you are wellcome..

THANK YOU FOR THE REPLY,

i AM aware of the capabilities of these instruments but rather lack knowledge on how easily it fits in with CAD applications ie. bestfit with pipes, circles, etc to convert point clouds into meaningful CAD shapes- deduce diameters of pipes etc - how good is the software which does that?

Thank you in anticipation of your reply.

hi...

when you buy instrument, they gave you an original software. but as i said before you can use all CADs. when u evaluate those points they become CAD shapes. for example trianglulation or lattice.

for this kind of aplications i use MicroSation and GeoTerrain softwares, etc. although you can use all CAD software. ofcourse the software, you want to use, requires some customisations for application.

you can render, extract profile or measure all the objects. if you havent seen cyrax's site ( you should see it. there are some example videos about applications.

good luck

I recently saw a demo by Mensi ( on their GS100 Long range Scanner, and they addressed the issue I think you are getting at. The next generation of their software will be able to make pipes fit to a known diameter for example. If you are interested in doing some hands on testing get the free cloudworks plug in for AutoCAD from cyra. You can download point clouds to work with from their site. Hope that helps.

Our firm has the cyrax 3D Laser Scanning System. Typically the modeling is done within Cyclone Software, which was developed by the Cyrax folks. The modeled surfaces then are exported to our client for use in AutoCad or Microstation.

We have been satisfied with the modeling software. Let me know if we can help!

Thanks yes thatbis exactly what we are trying to establish. Its capabilities and ease of use- The system is not cheap so we have to be sure of its capabilities as well as making sure we can sustain it and justify costs - We are presently trying to do such a feasibility study - How is it working out for you folks who have it or have access to such a service?

Thanks all for your replies I REALLY appreciate it.
