Lateral Pressure of Mulch

Anyone have any estimates to the weight and/or Ka and/or c values for mulch or even a Equivalent Fluid Pressure.

I found a couple of papers but one lists the phi of mulch at 45 degrees while the other lists it at 14 degrees with c = 12 psf.

This paper used direct shear tests

Any other thoughts on why these are so different?

True mulch should act as a granular material, so I would expect phi of 45 deg to be close. If they are confusing compost with mulch, then a lower phi would be appropriate.

Not answering your question, but I wouldn't design bins for mulch storage, as it is almost inevitable that in the future they will be loaded with heavier soil materials.
