Hi one and all,

I was recently approaced to do the lateral support for a basement excavation of up to 7m in depth in fine sand for a beach front apartmentment block(Blouberg strand, South Africa), the buildings surroundig the site varies from high rise to single level buildings.

I proposed an anchored soldier pile system, and im looking for some guidance on the spacing of these these piles as well as the type of pile to be used. The piles would be for lateral support purposes only and would not carry any vertical load.

Thanks

For soldier piles use phi/10 for your value of Cp. Determine the coefficient of passive resistance using Kp*Cp and then run the numbers. I'd be equally concerned about dewatering and the potential to develop critical gradients in the bottom of the excavation. Nothing fun about quicksand.
