Can anybody clarify what is standard practice when design the stanchions for a lattice portal. i.e. Under gravity loading the truss deflects and in theory creates a bending moment in the stanchions. As the truss is typically designed as simply supported, can it be assumed that by assuming a plastic hinge in the stachion the bending moment can disapate into the truss. Therefore the bending moment with in the stanchion need only be considered under lateral loading.
Or is it ytpical to design the stanchion for the bending moments due to the vertical dflection the truss and lateral loading???
Any advice welcomed.
