layer mapping

does anyone have info on layer mapping? I would like to take an assembly let say 3 parts, layer a,b,and c. I would like to save as either dxf or dwg and map layers. Then when I open that file say in Autocad that the 3 components are on those 3 layers so I can turn them on and off. This would be really essential to save me alot of work.

If all you want to do is save your SolidWorks drawing to a Dwg and have the parts on the same layer in AutoCad as they were in SolidWorks all you should have to do is a save-as DWG. When you call it up in AutoCad the layers that were created in SolidWorks will be there with the parts on them.
If you are on a earlier version than 2000 you may have to create a mapping file. Map files are also useful for putting different entities on different layers. If you type in Dxf under the help file index in SolidWorks and click on mapping it walks you through creating a map file if that is what you are looking to do.
Thinking about the question a little bit more..if I am not mistaken layers are new in SolidWorks2000. Are you on a earlier version? If so then creating a map file is your only way to go. If you need help let me know.
