Hi

I just started working with a company who use layers instead of simplified reps.

I can't understand this logic.

Can anybody enlighten me when layers are better than simlified reps?

Conversley, what arguments make usering layers in this way compromise other methodologies, especially in designs worked on concurrently by a group of say five or six designers?

Cheers

Dave

Dave, there is nothing to understand. AutoCAD old fashion. Try to show them the power of the simplified reps and let layers only for geometry construction. Don't switch to layers!

I've used reps for ten years already and am convinced of their virtues!

Man, you can't believe how hard it is to change some people's minds!

My opinion is that we're compromising the use of Pro/E to the lowest common denominator, i.e. people with no interest of using ProE as an efficient design tool.

As I'm sure you can imagine, it's a toughie. I can feel my blood pressure rising in the weeks I've been here already!

I wanted to use skeletons too, but what a sharp intake of breath when they were mentioned.

Cheers

Dave, I know what you are talking about. I had the same problems here, too. But don't forget: there is no change without changes. Fight and try to have some allies on your side.

Good luck.

At my old company I used layers instead of simplified reps when clients didn't have the licensing options for large assembly management or whatever they called it back then. It worked okay for simpler assemblies that ate up graphics resources but were relatively easy to regenerate.

I'd say justify the use of simplified reps with numbers. Compare load/regeneration times for an assembly with things blanked off on layers (yet still regenerated) versus a simplified rep of the exact same thing. That should win you some believers.

Go with Simp Reps. I agree layers are leftovers from the 2D world.
