The deep discharge battery supplying the inverter drops excessively when the battery is at 70% of charge and there is a initial 50 amp draw starting a a/c motor. Would a large capacitor on the 12v side of the inverter solve the problem?

Perhaps a motor controller on the AC motor that would limit the current surge at startup. Many modern motor controllers have such features.

In the navy they used to use a shunt to add resistors to large motor circuits during startup. The resistors added enough load to suppress the surge (until the motor developed enough speed and inductance) and were then shunted out and physically removed from the circuit.
