Ok so what is a leader basically. its a peice of Mtext at the end of a line with an arrow pointing to an area to describe it right but what are the tech terms to describe a leader

start at the start From the object to the textt

1 the arrow head
2 leader line 1 "usually the longest line in a leader not necessarily always straight IE splined leaders"
3 leader tail line 2 "normally the shortest line and the hardest at least for me to keep constent"
4 text "Mtext to be precise"

so what controlls the pecies of a leader what are the autocad terms/ your terms to refer to parts of a leader

if everyone helps everybody the world will be a better place

When you start a new leader type "s" for settings and this will bring up a dialog box that controls the leader settings.

For the tail line I normally just hit the enter key twice and jump straight to the mtext and allow Autocad to place the default line so that all my lines are to the same dimension.

yea steve me too normally but looking back at my current drawing i have some leaders using the qleader command and some with the leader command and there tails are different lengths if everyone helps everybody the world will be a better place

Shadow,
I don't know what would be causing your different leader lenghts after hitting enter 3 times (not 2, sorry) unless for some reason you changed the scale of your dimensions in mid-stream.

As far as your definitions, I think you hit it dead on:

Leader line
Tail

Shadow,
I found this tidbit ithe acad help:

System Variables: DIMASZ
Type: Real
Saved in: Drawing
Initial value: 0.1800
Controls the size of dimension line and leader line arrowheads. Also controls the size of hook lines.

Multiples of the arrowhead size determine whether dimension lines and text should fit between the extension lines. DIMASZ is also used to scale arrowhead blocks if set by DIMBLK. DIMASZ has no effect when DIMTSZ is other than zero.

i.e. the tail line (acad calls it a hook line) default is the same size as your arrowhead. Steve Smith
