A value stream map is a type of material information flow chart. Some experts think that because it is mapped that a push system (like MRP) is lean. This is mostly not true. A kanban system uses a visual cue like a card or signal to a downstream customer to order the next piece (pull system). This is true for within a cell or line or outside suppliers. Because the instruction is coming from an upstream customer, the symbol is a hook from the upstream operation. A recommended read is, "Learning To See" by Mike Rother and John Shook. ISBN 0-9667843-0-8. If safety stock is needed, add supermarket symbols to your VSM. Hope this helps!
