Hi,

I'm interested in learning GD&T and also Fits and Tolerances. What would be the best way for me to learn these two things short of going to uni? Books, online resources etc.

Do I need to learn one before the other or are these largely independent?

AtomicSheep,

Try this geotol.com/, my company has purchased this class for everyone in design, manufacturing, & inspection.

Starts out very basic but moves quickly.

If I had to pick one, I'd tackle the fits/tolerances thing first. You could perhaps simply read the pertinent standards for that (ASME B4.2, or ISO 286-1 and 286-2). That, along with some web searches on the topic, might be easy to do for a self-learner.

At least in the US, you'll never learn either at uni. You might be able to find courses at a community college or trade school. Most companies that need to deal with these subjects either teach them in house or hire instructors to do on site training. The internet of course, has many resources.

The Help for this program was created in Windows Help format, which depends on a feature that isn't included in this version of Windows.

I found a great deal about it when I bought a copy of Machinery's Handbook.

I didn't know Machinery's handbook talks about any of this stuff! Will have to look into it.

There are numerous companies that offer GD&T training, Effective Training Inc which was bought by ASE a few years back is probably the best known. You should also be able to find GD&T courses at most any college or trade school with a decent engineering or technical program. To learn fits and tolerances you really need a course in machine design or simply a few years working experience to learn what is practical and necessary.

CWB1 -- Effective Training in Michigan was bought by SAE International. But yes, there are numerous other resources too.

@DraftingMan thanks for the link but I prefer books and poking around first hand. I don't learn well in these kinds of settings. As they say - Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.

@Belanger Acquring standards is definitely on my to do list. Unfortunately the latter (googling) hasn't resulted in a lot of useful hits hence why I'm asking here.
