I'm looking for published references in using Liquidity Index ("relative moisture content") to evaluate the presence of sources / paths of water / swell potential. The structure was constructed on a cut/fill site, and some of the soils are pretty expansive. The heave in one area exceeds 6 inches.

I know about Sowers & Sowers; any other references, anyone?

It has to do with a litigation assignment and an important hearing next week -

I have a reference that discusses the liquidity index as a function of the plastic index, which then relates the plastic index to expasion potential.

The book is "Geotechnical Engineering Investigaiton Manual", Hunt, Roy E., McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1983, ISBN 0-07-031309-1

If this helps great, or if you interested in a copy to look at I'll see what I can do.

I'm intrigued; I haven't seen that book although I know of the author. I'll check locally; if it isn't available at the local university, I'll post a request in this thread.

Thank you for responding -
